Happy Mother’s day! Skincare Edition

Today I celebrate my mother, grandmothers and motherhood! Happy Mother’s Day. This is truly a special day for mothers & daughters alike. One of my fondest memories of my mother was of learning how to take care of my skin. I remember at 12 years old when my mother first took me to the beauty counter at Macy’s (then Daytons/Marshall Fields). She told me “it was time” that I “learned how to care for my skin.” The only options at that time in the make up department were Estee Lauder and Clinique plus or minus a few others depending on seasonal trends. My mother said the “best thing you can do for your skin and to look young is to moisturize and protect your face EVERYDAY.” This meant a tutorial on the best face creams, washes and makeup from the makeup artist who seemed thrilled at my mother’s approach to starting me so young. Beauty had always been an important part of my mother’s Lebanese culture, but preserving that beauty was worth its weight in gold. And I have to say at 70 years young, my mother has amazing skin. She’s never had any fillers or plastic surgery and she looks younger than most 50 year old women.

24 years later, I still use face creams, makeup, special face wash and keep a list of preferred brands. I also drink boatloads of water daily and invest in broad spectrum sunscreen. One of those preferred brands has always been Estee Lauder. While I prefer makeup from Bobbi Brown, I switch back and forth between makeup companies for the best moisturizer options. In January of 2021 when my face was in desperate need of additional moisture in the Arizona winter desert, I tried Estee Lauder’s new Revitalizing Supreme+ Global Anti Aging Cell Power Creme for my night time routine. The face cream is a great consistency (not too thick or runny) and really locked in moisture. And although I do not prefer fragrance in most beauty products, it also has a fantastic smell.

My nightly routine includes gently washing my face with a gentle cleanser, using toner, repair serum and then adding a thick cream. Some of the best advice from my grandmother and mother about using face cream was to make sure application on your skin at night was to be thick enough so that you could skate across your face. Several years of living in Arizona have taught me this is not only true but essential to maintaining plump & hydrated skin.

As with any beauty product, I highly recommend trying a sample of trial size of whatever product before you purchase it. Also, some beauty counters are happy to give free samples for you to try before you buy. Nordstroms and Sephora have a great policy that supports customer samples. You can typically walk into either department store and ask for any brand sample and they are happy to supply you with several.

Here’s to all the moms out there! May your skin forever be as vibrant as you are, cheers!
