Everyone needs a good stiff drink from time to time. If you’re a parent, drinking occasionally is normal. Enter the dirty martinis. Dirty martinis are delicious because they’re filled with olive juice. They’re usually served with an olive garnish and voila! Happy hour begins with a full glass. The Martini is as classic a cocktail as there is; everybody knows it, most people love it, and every decent bartender can make one. But not all martinis are the same. Here are some tips for making your perfect martini.
Gin or vodka?
Gin is the traditional spirit used to make a martini, but vodka is gaining ground thanks to its versatility and affordability. If you’re looking for something different, try a rye whiskey like Bulleit Bourbon or Pikesville Rye. Or go old school and use London Dry gin. Whatever you choose, just remember that gin is much stronger than vodka.
Vermouth or bitters?
Vermouth is the base of the martini, while bitters add complexity. Try adding a dash of orange bitters to give the drink a little extra kick. You could even mix up a batch of homemade bitters to serve alongside your martini.
Garnish or no garnish?
Martinis are traditionally served without a twist of lemon peel, but many bartenders now recommend including a twist to prevent oxidation. A twist is optional, though, depending on what type of martini you want to make. For example, a classic Dry Martini calls for equal parts gin and dry vermillion, so it doesn’t matter whether you include a twist. However, a Manhattan uses bourbon instead of gin, so you’ll want to omit the twist if you decide to go that route.
What about the olives?
There are several types of olives you can use but they should be pitted green olives. I love these Garlic or Jalapeno Stuffed Martini Olives from Delallo.
Once you have the right ingredients, learn how to make a dirty martini at home with this simple recipe:
Gin – 4.5 oz
Olive juice/brine – 1.5 oz
Vermouth (for good luck)
Olives for garnish
Ice
In a large glass, over ice, pour together the Gin and olive juice. Take the Vermouth bottle and swirl on top for good luck. Shake together and pour into fabulous martini glasses.
To stir your Dirty Martinis, use a cocktail mixing glass and a long bar spoon. If you don’t have one, you can use your cocktail shaker, a large metal glass or cup, and any long spoon. But if you want to look like you know your cocktails, use a mixing glass! Here’s a cocktail mixing glass I recommend.
