I’ve had curly hair my entire life and tried many products to tame my hair. I’ve experimented with salon based brands to drug store favorites such as L’oreal and Tresemme. Those products are good and have worked in a pinch, but I prefer Aveda’s Be Curly any day of the week. For the past 15 years, I’ve continued to use Aveda products because they keep my hair healthy and lively.
As many curly haired individuals will tell you, having curly hair does require work, although it’s much easier than straightening your hair every day. Besides, where else would I store all of my secrets? I have very specific styling techniques that have taken me 10+ years to perfect. I’m a firm believer in builder products (products that you can build through many days and then wash out normally). Also, satin sleep caps prevent overnight curl damage, even if my husband calls it my painter’s cap. Most importantly, I style my hair when wet using the ‘plopping’ technique. Trust me, just google it.
As a general reminder, hair is a fiber and should be treated like one. Similar to the textile industry, fibers are treated depending on how they are styled. This includes exposure to heat (straighteners, diffusing), dyes (highlights anyone?), and the environmental elements (hard water, etc.). When I started looking at my hair through the lens of the textile industry most of my hair needs started to make sense. No matter what your hair type, I would encourage you to do the same as it’s a HUGE game changer.
In Arizona, the heat and climate is exceptionally dry. It’s one of the most dry places on earth where both the air and hard water take moisture away by the second. For curly haired people the constant struggle to replenish that moisture is VERY real. This is why I use Aveda products every day, even if I do not wash my hair every day, in an effort to replenish that moisture. It’s also important to point out that Aveda products are builder products that wash out with water so you can use them every day & layer accordingly. If you are an AZ local, I would recommend Remedy Salon for their amazing stylists and services. They are the ONLY salon I trust with my hair.
If you have never heard of Aveda, it’s one of the more eco-friendly product lines on the market with a central headquarters in Minneapolis, MN (shout out to my MN roots). The Aveda brand promises quality from sustainable sourcing and they do their best to not use harmful chemicals in all of their products (but they do use some). The Aveda Be Curly Line is specially formulated for curly hair and will not dry it out. Prior to COVID, I would wash my hair 2-3 times per week to make sure it maintained its health with the Be Curly Shampoo & Conditioner.
However, during COVID, I dropped down to washing my hair 1-2 times per week due to some additional styling time created by my lack of commute from working remotely. Keep in mind, I was also postpartum and needed extra gentle products to support the lovely transitional hair loss. I still used leave-in conditioner, moisture spray and dry shampoo for styling purposes on most days. What I can say with full confidence is that the Aveda products made all of the difference even though they can be somewhat pricey. For anyone out there with curly hair I highly recommend the Be Curly line and recommend purchasing when the company runs discount promos. I would also love to hear from any curly haired readers on what favorite products they use, please comment below.
